We were 3 people and a guide riding on camels for a few days through the outback. Lawrence of Suburbia is what the locals call the city slickers who come for these treks. Camels are the most magnificent beasts. Stubborn but reliable they have such an enjoyable rhythm to their walk and its at a pace where one can enjoy the landscape. It was really hot, around 40 degrees Celcius (over 100 Fahrenheit). Stopped for a swim at a cool shady billabong (pool) in the afternoon and drank a lot of billy tea. That is tea boiled with a lot of sugar and a little salt which helps keep the electrolytes in balance due to dehydration caused by the heat. So if one doesn’t have rehydration salts handy billy tea does the trick.
We did a little climbing on our journey as well in the Macdonnell Range. Rode along with herds (is that what they are called?) of red kangaroos moving about in the distance and slept under the stars at night. And the stars are incredible since there isn’t any light pollution there and you can see the whole Milky Way splashed across the sky. One can watch the satellites streak across the sky and the meteorites flash and fall.
